A rare sighting of the blackburnian warbler has occurred at this preserve. Seen during its flight south during migration, the blackburnian population lives predominately in Canada. Although its population is considered stable, rapid deforestation in the United States and Canada indicate that the warbler’s mature and old-growth forests habitats are diminishing. Perhaps of utmost importance at Middleford North is its location within the Nanticoke River watershed. A watershed is an area that gathers water and drains it into a common point.

Lined with vibrant wildflowers and dense trees that canopy its edges, the Green River is home to the spreading false foxglove, southern maidenhair fern, and Eggert’s sunflower. Twenty-six miles of the Green River has been designated a Kentucky Wild River. Celebrated in John Prine’s song “Paradise,” the Green River is Kentucky’s most abundant source of aquatic biodiversity and considered the fourth richest river system in the United States.
